BYD Unveils Ultra-Fast EV Charging System: 400 km Range in Just 5 Minutes

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has introduced a groundbreaking ultra-fast charging system capable of delivering up to 400 kilometers (approximately 250 miles) of range in just five minutes. This innovation, part of BYD’s “Super e-Platform,” aims to match the convenience of traditional gasoline refueling times, addressing a significant barrier to widespread EV adoption.

The new charging system boasts a peak power output of 1,000 kilowatts (1 megawatt), utilizing a 1,000V high-voltage architecture and silicon carbide power electronics. This setup enables rapid charging rates, adding about 2 kilometers of range per second. BYD plans to roll out over 4,000 of these ultra-fast charging stations across China to support the new technology.

The charging system will debut with BYD’s latest models, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, which are equipped with the company’s advanced Blade lithium-iron phosphate batteries. These batteries are known for their safety and efficiency, further enhancing the appeal of BYD’s EV offerings.

This development positions BYD ahead of competitors like Tesla, whose latest Superchargers offer up to 500 kW charging speeds. By effectively halving charging times, BYD’s innovation could significantly alleviate range anxiety among potential EV buyers and accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
