Toyota Chairman and former CEO, Akio Toyoda, has consistently voiced his concerns about the shift towards an all-electric vehicle (EV) future.

Speaking at an event at Nagoya University, Toyoda predicted that millions of jobs in the automotive sector, particularly those focused on internal combustion engine (ICE) technology, could be lost if EVs become the sole option.

Highlighting the 5.5 million people employed in Japan’s automotive industry, Toyoda emphasized the potential impact on long-standing engine-related work. Despite the growing push for EV adoption, Toyoda advocates for a balanced approach that includes hybrids and cleaner ICE vehicles.

His stance, which has faced criticism, reflects Toyota’s strategic emphasis on hybrid technology amidst a slowing EV market. While other automakers are reassessing their EV-heavy strategies, Toyota continues to lead in sales, benefiting from its diverse hybrid lineup.
