Delhi’s EV Policy 2.0: Petrol Two-Wheelers to Be Phased Out by August 2026

The Delhi government has unveiled its draft Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, proposing a significant shift in the city’s transportation landscape. Under this policy, the registration of new petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers will cease from August 15, 2026, marking a decisive move towards promoting electric mobility in the capital.

Additionally, the policy outlines that starting August 15, 2025, the registration of new CNG auto-rickshaws will be halted, and existing permits will not be renewed. This measure aims to further reduce vehicular emissions and encourage the adoption of cleaner alternatives.

To support this transition, the Delhi government plans to expand the EV ecosystem by increasing the number of public charging stations, introducing battery swapping and recycling facilities, and launching educational programs to raise awareness about electric vehicles.

While the policy sets ambitious targets, experts emphasize the need for robust infrastructure to accommodate the anticipated surge in electric vehicles. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy of charging stations, maintenance facilities, and the feasibility of retrofitting older vehicles to electric.

The draft policy is currently under review and pending final approval. If implemented, Delhi could set a precedent for other regions aiming to reduce pollution through electrification.
